Seismic Velocity Characterisation of Geothermal Reservoir Rocks for CO2 Storage Performance Assessment

As part of a seismic monitoring project in geothermal field, where the feasibility re-injection and storage produced CO2 is being investigated, P- S-wave velocity characterisation study was carried out. The effect axial (up to 95 MPa) radial 60 stress on studied laboratory for broad range dry sedimentary metamorphic rocks that make up Kızıldere system Turkey. Thin section texture analyses conducted main reservoir formations, i.e., marble calcschist, confirm importance presence fractures reservoir: 2D permeability increases roughly by factor 10 when are present. Controlled acoustic-assisted unconfined confined compressive strength experiments revealed stress-dependence velocities related several rock formations. For each test performed, sharp increase observed at relatively low absolute levels, as result closure microcracks, yielding an increased mineral-to-mineral contact area, thus velocity. A change appeared have negligible impact resulting P-wave velocity, long it exceeds atmospheric pressure. bulk formations showed reducing function increasing temperature due thermal expansion constituting minerals. This most profound calcschist samples investigated.
